For Odoo Users

The Odoo search bar is smarter than you think

Four keystrokes that will change how you find things in Odoo. Works in every list view, in every module, in every version since 15.

The Odoo search bar is smarter than it looks. If you’ve been typing product names and scrolling through results, there are four keystrokes that will change how you use the system forever.

Open any list view — sales orders, products, customers, purchase orders, anything. Look at the search bar at the top. Most people treat it like a browser search box: type a word, hit enter, hope the right thing appears. That works. It also leaves most of what Odoo’s search can do unused.

The first trick: the filter keystroke

Click inside the search bar and start typing. Before you hit enter, look carefully at what Odoo shows below the box. It doesn’t just match text — it proposes search fields. Type INV/2026 into the sales order search, and Odoo will offer:

  • “Search Order Reference for: INV/2026”
  • “Search Customer Invoice for: INV/2026”
  • “Search Salesperson for: INV/2026”

Use the arrow keys to pick which field you want to search. Press Enter. Now Odoo isn’t guessing which field you meant — it’s searching the one you chose. This is the single biggest upgrade most Odoo users can give themselves, and almost nobody uses it.

The second trick: stacking filters with commas aren’t a thing — use enter

A common mistake: people type delhi, pending hoping to find pending orders from Delhi. Odoo doesn’t parse that.

The right way: type delhi, pick the customer-city field, press Enter. Type pending, pick the status field, press Enter again. Now you have two filters stacked. The results are the intersection — Delhi customers with pending status. You can stack as many as you want.

Each filter appears as a coloured pill in the search bar. Click the × on any pill to remove that filter. Click anywhere else in the search bar to add more.

The third trick: the OR inside one filter

Stacked filters are ANDed together. But within a single field, multiple values are ORed. If you want orders for either Mumbai or Pune, type mumbai, pick the city field, press Enter. Then type pune, pick the city field again, press Enter. Odoo stacks them as “city is Mumbai OR Pune” — not two competing filters.

This is not obvious and the UI doesn’t explain it, but once you know it, complex queries stop requiring the reports engine for most day-to-day needs.

The fourth trick: Group By and Favourites, from the keyboard

Click the small ▼ arrow at the right end of the search bar. You’ll see three tabs: Filters, Group By, Favourites.

  • Filters are the pre-built ones Odoo shipped — “Today”, “My Orders”, “Unread”, etc. One click each. They stack with your own typed filters.
  • Group By groups results by a field. Try “Group By > Salesperson” on your sales orders. The list collapses into foldable sections. Group by two fields (salesperson then customer, for instance) and you get a nested view. This is the fastest way to answer “who owes what” without opening a report.
  • Favourites is where you save a combination of filters + group-by + columns so you don’t rebuild it every morning. Click the star to save the current search configuration. Next time, one click brings back the whole view.

When it doesn’t work

Two situations where the search bar behaves oddly:

Custom fields. If someone added a custom field to a model but didn’t make it searchable, it won’t appear in the suggestions. A developer can fix this by adding searchable=True to the field definition, or by adding a search view entry. Worth asking — most custom fields should be searchable.

Very large lists. On tables with millions of records, the live-suggestion dropdown can feel sluggish. The search itself is still fast — it’s just the autocomplete that lags. Type the full term and press Enter rather than waiting for the suggestion.

One more, as a treat

Ctrl+K (or ⌘+K on Mac) opens the global search from anywhere in Odoo. No scrolling through the app menu to find the right module first. Type the customer name, press Enter, land on the customer record. It is the single most time-saving shortcut in the entire product, and it was added quietly in a version most people didn’t notice.

The Odoo search bar isn’t trying to hide anything. It just assumes you’ll discover these patterns on your own. Now you have.
